Entry 5: I'M A DJ!

Seriously, I do feel like a DJ when I have to record and edit my own podcast😁😁😁😁

Hello everyone and welcome back~

So this week  we learned about podcasting. Basically a podcast is an audio or video file (mp3, mp4 etc) that is published or "broadcast" on the internet and thus gaining the term "podcast". As expected, not everyone in the class knew about podcast. I think it happened because they are not aware of  its existence (unintentionally) even though we have used podcasts on the internet as teaching materials for our micro teaching and practicum (videos, lectures etc).  As for me, I am excited to talk about podcast since I like listening to audiobooks as I find it interesting to listen to someone who has really good pronunciation and enunciation to narrate my favourite books such as the Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and classic novels such as Jane Austen's novels (Pride and Prejudice, Emma etc)  and Louisa May Alcott's novels (Little Women). Podcasts is used to promote self-study and independent learning thus making it the most suitable material or way to be used with CALL.

Some of the advantages of using podcast in learning is its accessibility for the students. This is because the students can listen to the lecture anytime they want as long as they have a good internet connection. Plus, the students do not really have to be physically present in the class and they do not have to worry about missing a lecture. Missing a class is a problem for dedicated students who is worried about missing class/lecture due to sickness or emergencies that results in them have to skip a class and have to replace it some other time. With podcast, the students do not have to worry about missing a class/lecture because as soon as the lecture ended, the lecturer can immediately upload it on the internet, making it available for the public. Therefore, the students do not have any excuse on missing a class.

Other than that, I think podcast is good for students' note taking. This is because in a normal class, sometimes the lecturer talks too fast or delivers a lot of information at once and making it impossible for the students to register what did the lecturer was saying. With podcast, the students have the freedom to work at their own pace, starting and stopping when necessary and replaying key-points of the lecture/podcast as they deem necessary.

However, not everything is perfect including podcast. One of the disadvantages of podcast is it is not suitable when it comes to explaining complex subjects that requires visual support to help student understands a topic. This is because some subjects need further explanation and visual examples by the lecturer/teacher as it is too complicated for the students to understand with audio alone. Podcast is suitable for simple topics/subjects.

Other than that, I think podcast is a major disadvantage for kinesthetic and visual learners because they learn primarily by seeing someone do something or doing it themselves. Plus, listening to podcast is a passive activity which will bore the kinesthetic and visual learners to death and as educators, we do not want to be the reason why they kill themselves for asking them to listen to podcast (Joking!).

Therefore, I think as an educator, we have to decide by ourselves when to use podcast in our lesson because at the end of the day we want our students to learn effectively. Podcast has been proven to be an effective tool of learning however we have to consider using it effectively.

I think that's it for today and I will upload my podcast as soon as I figure out on how to add it from SoundCloud to this blog as a widget. Stay tuned~
